Do you have a new driver at home? That can be stressful—we totally get it. Feel free to pull from our accumulated knowledge, and see what you can learn. For instance, have you ever asked:

It’s expensive to have my son/daughter on my policy; are there any discounts I can take advantage of to lighten the load?

We’re happy to answer this one with a resounding YES! There are several ways to take advantage of available discounts.

Sign your teen up for driver’s education classes and upon completion of the course, talk to your agent about applying the respective discount. Good grades can help too—they don’t just earn tuition money or a higher spot on an admissions list. With your student earning at least a B average, most providers across the board (http://www.dmv.org/insurance/good-student-auto-insurance-discounts.php) will be able to apply a “good student” discount to your policy. As long as your teen is earning a B average or better and you’ve provided a record to your provider, you’re eligible.

Beyond good grades and driver’s ed, parents can also take advantage of technological advancesin the auto insurance industry. Many providers are now offering discounts based on a proven record of safe driving. How can a teen prove they’re a safe driver without you in the passenger seat to vouch for them? A simple plug-in device—such as Safeco’s RightTrack® or MAPFRE’s teenSMART®— that tracks driving habits and evaluates safety. Ohio Mutual Insurance Group’s partnership with Cellcontrol offers another option to diminish distraction.

Here’s another shot at savings: if you’ll be purchasing another vehicle for your teen, or if they’ve already saved up for and purchased their own, be sure to ask about discounts for insuring multiple vehicles. It’s understood: any little savings are welcome.

Raising a family is an expensive endeavor. Your agent can help, offering auto coverage discounts for safe driving, good grades, and the like. Let your agent’s know-how simplify the process—keep asking questions!
